Cultural Development

"Cultural movement that moulds mind"
A cultural movement is flourishing in Walve taluka along with Islampur through the efforts of Rural Development minister Jayant Patil. This movement is not only promoting the artistic talents of the youth but is also keeping their minds fresh. Our arts and culture have great strength to shape up the society. People in the urban area thumb their noses at the mention of cultural prorammes. This is largely because hardly any cultural environment is left there. But Islampur has a great cultural tradition. Even a classical music and songs programme draws a crowd of 5000 to 10000 fans. The artistes are applauded. The arts like music, singing, drama, dance, drawing and literature give an unalloyed joy. They inject warmth and vibrancy in life and thus a pleasant atmosphere is created in the society. Arts play a crucial role in moulding the social mind. Recognizing this fact, Jayant Patil has strived hard for development of all sorts of arts. This has fostered arts and crafts in the region. It has virtually turned into a movement. Because of all this, the higest cultural environment is witnessed in Walve taluka.

Such a cultural movement does not shape up within 5 to 10 year. A big contribution has to be made for this. Things like persistence, consistency, tenacity, group of workers besides love and respect for artistes enables all this. Jayant Patil did not start this movement suddenly. It was started 30 years back. To perpetuate the memory of Rajarambapu Patil, he set up a voluntary organisation named Rajarambapu Prabodhini. This organization has been functioning under the guidance of Jayant Patil over the years.

This organization is implementing several projects in several soft fields like arts, sports, literature, music, education, science and women’s empowerment. Many societies and branches are functioning through this Prabodhini. Many organisations like Maharshtra Sahitya Parishad, Akhil Bharatiya Natya Parishad, Marathi Vidnyan Parishad, Bharatiya Yog Vidyadham, Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva School, Aastha Arogya Kendra, Dnyanprabodhini library, Avishkar group, competitive exam guidance centre and others are functioning here. Many programmes are arranged via this Prabodhini. Through the efforts of Jayant Patil, Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad branch was started. It is functioning since last 20 years. Programmes like lectures, worshops, poets gathering, story-telling are organised regularly. This provides platform to the budding writers and poets. It also cultivates taste for literature among them. A day long literary conference is also held in memory of Rajarambapu every year.

Natya Parishad holds an acting training camp. Gatherings of drama artistes; seminars, symposia, workshops and one act play contests are held. The young talent is promoted by holding singing competition and tabla-playing contest. The literary and cultural activities have been taken further by building a drama complex at Islampur. This drama centre is playing an instrumental role in shaping the dramatic talent of the young folks and providing them an opportunity to showcase their innate talents. People also get to witness the artistic talents of actors from other places here. In this way, rural artistes and cultural programmes have got their rightful forum to showcase their artistic talent.

To promote exchange of thoughts, lecture series are organised through the efforts of Jayant Patil. Prominent literatteurs, journalists, economists and entrepreneurs are invited on the occasion and people get the opportunity to listen to them. Experts in various fields are invited at other times too. Through the inspiration of Jayant Patil, Avishkar group has been set up in the taluka. Through this forum state level and national level artistes are invited four to five times in a year. Every year annual membership drive is conducted through it. This forum provides opportunity to see and listen to premium cultural programmes. Both ends of entertainment and enlightenment are achieved through this medium. Just one look at the litany of artistes attending this programme will show the quality of programmes organised through Avishkar group. Eminent artistes such as Pandit Vijay Ghate, Pt. Bhavani Shankar, Pt. Rakesh Chaurasia, Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Suresh Wadkar, Shaunak Abhisheki, Swapnil Bandodkar, Rishikesh Ranade, Padmaja Fenani-Joglekar, Shreya Ghoshal, Sadhna Sargam, Bela Shende, Ashok Hande and Jagdish Khebudkar among many others have presented their scintillating performances here. All this has forstered a close bond between Avishkar, artistes and connoisseurs of art.

A branch of Marathi Vidnyan Parishad has been started here and it functions under the guidance and cooperation of Rajarambapu Prabodhini and Mumbai’s Marathi Vidnyan Parishad. This Vidnyan parishad or science council has been set up with the objectives of comprehensively implementing the schemes like developing scientific temper in the society, spreading science in the taluka, eradication of superstition, awareness about health and de-addiction drive. Various projects are carried out by the parishad for women and children. All India science conference was also held here in 1997.

Any cultural movement can become dynamic only when it works with noble objectives of promoting reading habits, and furthering enlightenment and awareness. With these objectives in view, Rajarambapu Prabodhini has set up a library. This library was set up in 1998 to promote the cause of reading. This library is stocked with over 11000 books. All leading newspapers, magazines, weeklies, fortnightlies, monthlies are available here. It satisfies the thirst of the youth for reading high quality literature. There is a separate section for women and children. Free reading sessions are held during the Diwali and summer vacations to promote reading habit. The library has been presented with the state government’s Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Best Library award. Dnyanprabodhini has been running a competitive exam guidance centre since 1997. Against the background of increasing importance of competitive examinations and the awareness about them in the young generation, this guidance centre has been set up to give suitable guidance to the youths aspiring for government jobs. Various subject experts are invited to guide the aspirants at this centre. Students are prepared for competitive exams by holding practice tests, group discussions, mock interviews and physical tests among others. There is a study room which has a capacity of 100 students, enabling them to study comfortably. The library is well-stocked with all the latest books on various subjects. Guidance is available for the aspirants of various exams conducted by Union Public Service Commission, banking exams, police recruitment tests. A total of 315 students of the centre have so far landed jobs. Family counseling centre for women is also run here. This centre is functional through the coopration of State Women’s Commission and Walva Panchayat Samiti since 2001. Family disputes are resolved through this medium.

Lecture series by eminent speakers, elocution contests, story telling contets, singing competitions are held through the education complex too. Various programmes are held to bring out the latent talents in the students. This provides a great opportunity for school and college students to present their talents. This also creates a cultural ambience on its own.

Thus, Jayant Patil has created a cultural ambience through various fora in the taluka. People are also realizing the importance of culture in life and hence such cultural programmes have been attracting massive crowds year after year. This kind of cultural milieu seems exclusive to this taluka only and it is not found anywhere else. It is the continual work in the cultural field since last 25 to 30 years that is responsible for the creation of this atmosphere. The cultural environment thus created in the taluka has now assumed the form of a movement. This movement is now promoting love and appreciation of culture, arts and crafts and thus moulding well-cultured young generation.
